Breaking with all black, some Chabad men are pushing fashion boundaries. A group of Chabad-affiliated men are flouting their community’s sartorial codes, donning boldly colored shoes, trendy hats, bow ties, sharply cut jackets and pocket squares.

So even Orthodox jews are wearing pocket squares? That does it.

Javier: “Dad, can I move away from you and mom when I’m a grown up?”

Me: “Yes.”

Javier: “When I’m 39? I can move away?”

Me: “Javi, you can move away when you’re 18!”

Javier: “I’m going to move away somewhere and give speeches. Then I’ll put them on the radio and send them to you and mom. I’ll start with: ‘Hi, I’m Javier. I used to live with Zoe and Kate and Miguel. And my cats Watson and Sophie. Watson was black with a little white; one Sophie was all black and the other Sophie was all grey.’ I’ll start like that, just the first time.”

Me: “Where are you going to do this from?”

Javier: “I think I want to do it from Chicago. Are there places where people do that in Chicago?”

Me: “Yes.”

Javier: “Good. I think I want to make speeches and send them on to your radio.”

Me: “You mean radio stories?”

Javier: “Yes. I want to give speeches and record them and send them to your radio.”

Me: “Do you mean like news stories?”

Javier: “Maybe. Lots of different kinds of stories. Just on your radio.”

Me: “Do you mean, like NPR? Do you want to be on NPR when you’re a grown up?”

Javier: “Yeah” [he said it with voice fading, starting to look wistfully away out his window].

Foxon Park and its peers — Moxie (Maine), Cheerwine (North Carolina), Vernor’s (Michigan), White Rock (New York), Big Red (Texas), Boylan’s (New Jersey), among others — were the sodas that time forgot. As the exhaustive consolidation of small brands produced standardized American consumer products from coast to coast, they remained, against all odds, regional favorites. Coca-Cola and Pepsi became titans of the American soda market, and yet these bubbly icons of regionalism endured. Locals treasured them, former residents pined for them, and the rest of us hardly knew they existed.

I’m not necessarily suggesting that we spend less on anti-terrorism programs. Like everyone else, I am grateful there have been no mass casualty terror events since 9/11. I’m just wondering, instead, what possible justification there could be for spending so relatively little to try to reduce the casualties of gun violence. […]

Our government has asked us consistently since 9/11 to sacrifice individual liberties and freedom, constitutional rights to privacy for example, in the name of national security. And we have ceded these liberties. Yet that same government in that same time hasn’t asked anyone to sacrifice some Second Amendment rights to help protect innocent victims from gun violence.
”

- Andrew Cohen, on terrorism and gun violence. (via theatlantic)

"Americans have repeatedly rejected an expansion of gun control because it doesn’t work. Look no..."

“Americans have repeatedly rejected an expansion of gun control because it doesn’t work. Look no further than Aurora, where both the city and the theater where the shooting occurred have rules forbidding the carrying of any firearms (the city statute was deemed unenforceable, however, because of the state’s concealed-carry permit statute). On top of that, no one can fire a weapon within Aurora city limits except at gun ranges — not even, apparently, in self-defense. Of course none of that stopped the perpetrator in this case from committing the murders.”

-
Ed Morrissey argues that gun-control has failed this country (via theweekmagazine)

Sorry, but that’s not “gun control” but merely laws about where/when they can be used. I think what most people have in mind is the banning of certain kinds of weapons and/or ammunition. For example, “drug control” means that certain kinds of narcotics are not allowed to be sold. Period. But that’s different than saying “you can buy any kind of drugs but simply can’t consume them in public” and calling that drug enforcement.

"Have you heard this new movie, the Batman movie, what is it, The Dark Knight Lights Up or whatever..."

“Have you heard this new movie, the Batman movie, what is it, The Dark Knight Lights Up or whatever the name is. That’s right, Dark Knight Rises. Lights Up, same thing. Do you know the name of the villain in this movie? Bane. The villain in The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane, B-a-n-e. What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran and around which there’s now this make-believe controversy? Bain. The movie has been in the works for a long time. The release date’s been known, summer 2012 for a long time. Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bane?”

-
Rush Limbaugh’s latest conspiratorial musings. (via theatlantic)

Perhaps Limbaugh forgot that (a) the hero (Bruce Wayne) is one of the richest men on earth and (b) Bane has been around since 1993. But even Limbaugh’s usually tortured logic breaks down here. Notice he points out that The Dark Knight Rises “has been in the works for some time.” In fact, the movie was “in the works” since before 2008, with the rough storyline in place by 2008, with the villain Bane locked down in 2010. You know, long before anyone was sure that Romney would win his party’s nomination.

But if we’re on the subjects of conspiracies and candidates … did anyone notice that the greatest superhero of this summer’s blockbuster (two, if you include both Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne) is a rich playboy who everyone suspects as vapid and incompetent, but turns out to be a self-sacrificing idealist who puts the people first?

A student at UC San Diego was rounded up in a drug bust then left in a DEA holding cell for five days without food or water, after officers apparently forgot he was in there.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested nine people and confiscated large amounts of pills, marijuana, and weapons during a raid near the UCSD campus on April 21. One of them, Daniel Chong, was eventually told that he was not being charged and would be allowed to go home, but after being returned to his cell to await release, no one ever came back for him. He was locked in the 5-foot by 10-foot room with no windows and no toilet from Saturday to Wednesday before he was discovered, 15 pounds lighter and totally incoherent.

Chong says he heard people in nearby rooms, but his cries for help went unheeded. As things got more desperate, he tried to drink his own urine and eventually tried to kill himself with the glass from his own eyeglasses. Chong spent three days in intensive care, where nurses said that he had apparently swallowed the glass, damaging his throat and lungs.

The only other thing that Chong had to ingest was a bag of methamphetamine that he apparently found in his cell.

Titanic 2 of the Day: Because the maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic didn’t exactly go as planned, an Australian billionaire has commissioned a replica of the ship for a series of journeys that will hopefully have a happier ending.

Clive Palmer, a Queensland-based mining billionaire, is partnering with China’s CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the ship, which will be ready for passengers by 2016.

“It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,” he said in a statement.

The ship’s first trip will be from London to New York — rather than from Southampton to New York like the “unsinkable” original — and Palmer admits that some potential passengers will stay away because of superstitions.

“It is going to be designed so it won’t sink. But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen,” he said, encouragingly.

No word on what kind of deck chairs the new ship will have, or how they’ll be arranged.

[cnn.]

In which a titan of industry tries to become a Titanic of industry.
